Week of January 20, 2014

Grade Four has had  a busy week.  Okay, so he got lucky.  Jonathan and I had a challenge of addition basic facts in Mathletics.  Also, we had a Multiplication Feud with two teams of students.  I called out a multiplication fact and the students would race to ring the bell and give the answer. When doing multiplying I noticed that some students revert to addition answers.  So, I have them read a multiplication equation as follows.  (3x2) would be three (groups of two), I try to encourage the students to use the words groups of instead of times. It is my hope this will reinforce the idea of groups in multiply versus individual in adding.  Also, we have been adding three and four digit numbers. Plus, we are using front end rounding strategy for estimating.  We have a whopper of a Math Problem this week which the students have enjoyed finding the answer too.

We have been talking about Genre in Languages Arts this week.  The Book Report assignment should have come home on Thursday.  It is a Non-Fiction Scavenger Hunt.  The students are searching for three different Non-Fiction texts to examining the features outlined on there take home pages.  This will allow us an opportunity to compare Non-Fiction with Fiction books.  We will be spending more time in class in the coming weeks looking at other genres.  We are creating an "I Recommend" display list of books that we have read and would recommend to others.   The students also did a reading comprehension activity on line.

Our writing this week, was rewriting paragraphs using the correct contractions in the paragraph.  This was done without the use of net books.  It was done the old fashioned way with pencil and paper.  Lesson 13 is up on Spelling City and available to practise for next week.  We will begin doing some Handwriting next week.  This is usually a hit.

We are finishing off two art projects at the moment.  In both the students are learning about perspective.  The projects are called "Tree Art" and "Free Fallin'".  I'm most impressed with both projects as the students have been working hard to complete them.

In Social Studies, we are very close to completing Alberta, A Sense of the Land. We have continued to identify the different regions on a  class made map of Alberta.

The MS Read-A-Thon will be wrapping up at the end of January. Please remember to encourage the students to read every night and keeping track of the amount of reading.  I believe there are prizes available for the students who participate.

Enjoy the warm weather while it is here as I have heard that it will return to cooler days very soon.  Finally, Report Cards will be coming home on Wednesday.  Have a great week!
